Te Araroa – Day 38

Hamilton to Whatawhata – 15km (773km total)

With only 15km to walk today, we could have a late start to the day.

I slowly packed up at the backpackers and spent the morning calling and messaging my family and friends for Christmas.

Christmas on the Te Araroa

On the outskirts of Hamilton the trail goes through Taitua Arbortum which was a nice little reserve. It was then through farmers fields. There was no long grass (win!), however, the ground is very uneven and it is alway a game of will I roll an ankle today? Thankfully the answer was no.

As the track went back onto the road, the heavens opened with the predicted rain. Thankfully, it was only 3km Whatawhata, where we were greeted with the kind hospitality of Roger at the local pub.

Free beers were offered for Christmas. The guitar came out and then Christmas dinner round two and pavlova again, all with MTV playing classic 80’s hits in the background.

Today I am thankful for short walking days and great hospitality.
